What to do if You're in a Crash

  • 1. Stop. Most states, including Minnesota require you to stop and exchange information with any other involved persons. If your car is drivable, pull off to the nearest safe shoulder.
  • 2. Turn off your engine. This will reduce the chance your car will catch on fire.
  • 3. Get to safety. Get out of your car and move a safe distance away from your vehicle and other traffic. Many people get more seriously injured, or even killed, in second accident that occurs in the area where they had their original accident.
  • 4. Call 911. Always ask for police to come to the scene and, if necessary, for an ambulance for any injured persons, including yourself.
  • 5. Exchange information. Collect as much information as you can about the accident, and the persons involved. At the least, make sure you get the other driver's full name, address, telephone number, driver's license number, and insurance information. Also try to note the make and model of any involved vehicles, and their license plates. If there are witnesses to the accident, or police who come to the scene, get their identifying information as well.
  • 6. See a doctor. Make sure that you seek appropriate medical attention as soon as possible following the accident. If you are experiencing any symptoms at the scene, report them to the police and/or ambulance personnel. It is also common for symptoms to show up hours, or even days, after an accident. If you experience any symptoms following an accident, see your doctor for a complete examination.
  • 7. Report to your insurance. Call your insurance agent, and report the accident to the company. Make sure to provide them all of the information you collected at the scene.
  • 8. Statements. Frequently insurance companies wish to take written or tape-recorded statements of persons involved in accidents. You are not required to give a statement to any insurance company. Even if your insurance company wishes to take a statement from, you it is advisable to discuss the matter with a lawyer, first.
